Run with Julianna!

NOV. 6

For as long as I can recall running has been a part of my life. It has become an integral part of my mental healthcare routine as well as a tried-and-true method of stress relief. In my journey, I have run for several reasons but none more motivating than crossing the NYRR NYC Marathon off my bucket list, while helping raise awareness to bringing fresh produces to the underserved communities- especially in The Bronx.

My family has always said they could never imagine me sitting still since I was born. That is likely the reason my parents signed me up for all physical activity programs as soon as possible. From elementary through high school running/ sports- joining a team, competing in events and the satisfaction that comes with it were life defining. Upon graduating High School, I joined the United States Army, and my relationship with running became an obligation instead of a choice. Though I was still a strong runner, I found my interest waning and I resigned myself to continue running as ordered. After separating from the military, the transition back to civilian life impacted my desire to run as it had most aspects of my life at the time. I found myself running with the intent to “feel healthier” instead of being motivated by the joy it brought me in the past. I ran whenever I could find the time until COVID-19 came along and prompted me to take a much-needed look inward.

We all had to reckon with quarantine, isolation, and an increased focus on our self-care routines. I was fortunate enough to be able to spend more time with my son Julian (4 years old) and in him found a new spark of motivation.

Not long after, I found a local running group- Bronx Sole and began to recover that sense of camaraderie I had not felt in a while. Through this group I was able to learn more about NYC running community and local organizations. Where I ran into Grassroots Grocery.

To that end, I am honored that Grassroots Grocery has given me the opportunity to run in their name in the NYRR NYC Marathon this year. November is around the corner, and I do need your support in securing a spot at the starting line as well your support in helping GG continue the marathon in stocking up and maintaining these community fridges as all the amazing support they provide to the community. Donations of any amount are immensely appreciated and below listed suggested that hold significance to me and for fun:

$26.20 = 26.2 miles to complete a Marathon

$13.10 = 13.1 miles Half Marathon

$25     = weekly produce for 16 families

$50     = weekly produce for 32 families

$110   = 110% + Dedication
